Cat out of the Bag

Yes, I can now exclusively reveal the secret - it's as Anonymous put it in the comment, I'm being publishified! Like an utter turnip I forgot to ask for the details - like how much my agent sold it for (oops), or when it's likely to come out, or if I have to write another one - but I'm sure I'll know these things sooner or later. But I can tell you that my book will be published by Jonathan Cape (hardback) and Vintage (paperback). And that it will be the Crockatt & Powell book of the month. Year. YEAR. And that I've been invited to Martin Amis's launch party tonight. Yes, it's the highlife for me! Until Monday, that is, when you can find me back behind the counter of your friendly neighbourhood book store...

  2. Very well done indeed! Are we allowed to know the title??

  3. Gods Behaving Badly. But the publisher doesn't like the title much so it might have to go.

  4. But I love that title!! Hope you get to keep it, Marie! Or maybe you prefer the publisher's options anyway? "The Book Formerly Known as GBB ..." springs to mind ...

  5. I know now. It's enough so the boys have to be nice to me if they want me to stick around... ;-)

  6. Good for you, Marie! Neither of my publishers were able to give advances, but then again I'm a TPA (Tiny Press Author - for the uninitiated), so no surprises there!!

Occasionally someone will give me a chocolate biscuit though, so I'm happy! (no comments about Essex girls being really cheap dates, please ...)

  7. I dunno - you just can't get the staff these days...

Time was when every young bookseller was "writing a book" - it never meant it would ever get bloody published, let alone by bloody Random House!

As for being nice we will probably not ask you to do the washing up in the cellar again but that's as far as we can go.

PS I hope you are mentioning the bookshop to all the great and good you are meeting. The shop deserves some credit - proof of what great things can happen when a creative and free space is made available?

  8. I couldn't possibly have done it without the support of the boys at C&P. You wait til you see what kind of discount I'm going to make them give the shop...

Planning those award acceptance speeches already eh?

We are notorious grumpy old men but we are very chuffed and pround of our events and marketing gal...

  10. Congratulations from deepest Devon Marie. I love the title, tell them a bog standard ordinary reader has had the privilege of reading it and it can't POSSIBLY be called anything else.
